One of my roommates in college told me this story.  And no, we did not go to this college.  I have no opinion of this college, just that people need to not park on the roads around it because when I needed to go to the 4th or 5th alternate beer distributor and I had to drive through their ‘campus’, it was a pain in my neck.

While I worked at Swarthmore College a professor could not get her computer to turn on. When I checked to see if it was plugged in I found it was plugged into a surge protector. The surge protector was plugged into itself.

a friend of mine posted this story while he was a tech in college:

i had one girl the other day tell me that her computer wouldn’t turn on. so i went to her room and saw the monitor on the desk and she said there it won’t turn on. so i looked under the desk and there was no tower. i asked where it was and she seriously pointed to the monitor and said it’s right there are you blind? i laughed so hard in her face, i couldn’t help it

question (Y!A):  If i log off of my computer ( turn it off ) will my auction sniping program keep running?   I cant sleep with the computer on it is hella noisy

answer:  if your computer is off, nothing is running. so no, it won’t keep running

I’ll admit though, once in a while the advice I give out has a point, sometimes it’s actual advice and not a smack on the head. but for now, I leave you with this.

Trying to get rid of his video card?

question (Y!A): Does anyone know what a video card does? and can you get rig of it?

I tried to be nice that day:  a video card allows you to plug a monitor or tv or display device into your computer to have visual output. the output device depends on what card it is. you can get rid of it, but if you do not have one in your computer at that point, you cannot actively use your computer.

Using fake email addresses to sign up for sites

question (Y!A):  On myspace i made up a fake email adress and myspace sent me info but i cant get it?
please help me find my pass word so i can log in and i also cant find my password for my other page thhey sent me

answer:  That would be a problem entirely in itself. You first off, fraudulently signed up for MySpace. And wanting your password can only be done legally by having a REAL email account. Without Cracking the accounts password, you’re out of luck.

95% of the users asking questions on Y!A are idiots.  I’m not a grammar cop or anything, but if you drink, that site can be funnier than foreign films.

This one was f-ing funny when I came across it during my lunch break at work.

question (Y!A): Why won’t my computer detect my usb cable? If anyone can help, im me at alohasunshine96826 (yahoo im).

answer: computers don’t detect cables. they detect devices attached to those cables. make sure you have a device connected to your usb cable. second, make sure you have the drivers installed for your device.

you can google this question so I’m leaving the screen name on it.  Maddox would agree.

Printing at the Office haywire?

Question (Y!A):

one week ago, when i was at the office, i wanted to print an excel document… and it didnt work saying something about printer setup. and it used to work fine one month ago…
but, on the other hand when i wanted to print a word document it worked without any problems
HOW CAN IT BE POSSIBLE, FOR A LAPTOP TO PRINT IN WORD BUT NOT IN EXCEL? it is illogical… pls answer good

Answer:

its not illogical. in excel, you should check on your page setup and make sure that the page size and margins are in printable range. for example, in word for some random document it could be set up to print a document on letter size paper which is fine an any printer, but accidentally have excel set up on quarter inch margins or even on plotter paper which wont printer on any printer but a plotter. check the page settings, that’s your best bet.

In a month, a lot of stuff can change.

Emails about Lottery Winnings

February 3, 2008 at 7:46 pm (ReasonAble Security: PC IT) (, )

AmbiguicCoherence

First off, are you an idiot?

If you won the lottery, you would probably be actively participating in it and you would need to contact the lottery place and tell them that you won and then prove it.  Second, why the hell would they contact you anonymously by email.  If you had entered a raffle (and if you are signing up for 10 million dollar raffles, please tell me about them so I can press my luck at that level of income, because believe me, I am not making that kind of dough) you most likely left your phone number and address on the ticket – so expect to be contacted by one of those means.

If you respond with any personal info, you have been taken advantage of.  You have fallen for a common email financials phishing scheme.  Congratulations, you probably said “No, I am not an idiot”, but you truly are.

Everyone else… good job on having an IQ above 40.
